Trust in digital mental health care: How to verify your practitioner

Differentiate and you stand out in a very crowded marketplace. Present your uniquen emphasize

Digital mental health services make professional support more accessible, but choosing a qualified practitioner still requires care. In Ontario, social workers and social service workers are regulated by the OCSWSSW and must meet professional and ethical standards. Their public Online Register lets you verify registration, practice restrictions and disciplinary history, helping to make informed decisions about who to trust with your care.

Finding mental health support is an important step, especially during difficult or vulnerable moments. Today, that support may be only a few clicks away. Digital mental health platforms have made it easier to connect with a practitioner from home. Choosing someone to work with still requires care and consideration.

If you are looking for a social worker or social service worker, there is a simple way to confirm that the professional you are considering is registered and authorized to practise in Ontario.

What does it mean to be a regulated professional?

Social workers and social service workers are regulated professions in Ontario. Regulation exists to protect the public and establish clear expectations for professionals who provide services.

The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) is the regulatory body for these professions. Before registering, applicants must meet specific entry-to-practice requirements. Once registered, professionals are required to follow its Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and meet ongoing professional learning requirements.

Choosing a social worker or social service worker in Ontario means that you have an additional layer of assurance that the person providing your care is subject to professional standards and accountable to the OCSWSSW.

Online care still comes with professional accountability

Seeing a practitioner through a digital platform does not change the professional standards they are expected to meet.

Registered social workers and social service workers are accountable to the same requirements regardless of whether you see them in person or virtually on a screen. They must practise ethically, protect client information and maintain the knowledge and skills needed to provide professional services.

The OCSWSSW also has processes for addressing concerns about the conduct or practice of registered professionals.

“If you have questions or concerns about your practitioner, talk to us,” says Denitha Breau, OCSWSSW Registrar and CEO. “We can explain the obligations your social worker or social service worker has to you, the oversight we provide and guide you through our complaints and discipline processes if you believe your practitioner has fallen short of their professional standards.”

Take a moment to verify your practitioner

Before starting with a social worker or social service worker, you can use the OCSWSSW’s Online Register to check their registration status.

The Online Register is a public, searchable resource that allows you to search by a practitioner’s name or registration number. It can help you confirm:

  • Registration: Whether the practitioner is registered with the OCSWSSW and authorized to practise.
  • Status: Whether there are any specific terms, conditions or limitations on their certificate of registration.
  • History: Whether the practitioner has a history of disciplinary action.

Taking a few minutes to check the Online Register can help you make a more informed choice about who you trust with your care or the care of someone you love.

Your care. Your choice. Your right to know.

Digital mental health services can make support more accessible, and convenience should not mean skipping important questions about who is providing that support.

If you are considering working with a social worker or social service worker, ask about their qualifications and take a moment to verify their registration with the OCSWSSW. Whether care happens in person, over the phone, or through a digital mental health platform, all professionals registered with the OCSWSSW are held to the same ethical and professional standards.

When someone you love needs support, knowing who you are trusting with their care matters. Trust one of ours with one of yours.
